Talk: Honey - from Flower to Jar

Winterbourne Medieval Barn

7-9pm in The Cartshed

Ever wondered about keeping bees? Find out all about hives and the wonderful world of bees.

Honey bees and flowers co-evolved over the last 130 million years to be completely dependent on each other. Only recently (in the last 10,000 years) humans learned to use products from the honey bee colonies such as honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom.

In this talk we will explore how bees find suitable flowers, collect nectar from them, bring it in the colonies and process it into honey, the function and behaviour of the worker, the drone and the queen honey bee. We will also look at how the 50,000 individuals within the colony communicate to each other and are organised to be an effective and cohesive unit.

Marin Anastasov holds a BSc degree in Animal Science and MSc in Organic Farming from Aberdeen University. He is passionate about sustainable food production and his entire working career has been in organic food and farming. He has kept bees for over 25 years and currently manages 30 colonies in Gloucestershire. His beekeeping interests are in honey bee-plant interaction, honey bee breeding and honey bee biology. Marin is a Master Beekeeper and holds the National Diploma in Beekeeping, which are the highest beekeeping qualifications awarded in the UK. He is Trustee of Gloucestershire Beekeepers Association, serves on the British Beekeepers Association Examinations Board. Marin teaches beekeepers at all levels and is involved in promoting the craft of beekeeping.
